Whether you’re a young adult ready to start saving for retirement, a 50-something ready to pay off your debts or a young married couple just starting your own family, sustainable savings and accessible investments are two essential things.
PiggyVest aims to help you do both of those things while guiding you through the process! Everyone finds their own unique use for the app, and that, we think is the beauty of PiggyVest.
Every month, we shine a spotlight on one saver (or group of savers), asking them questions about their savings and investment culture and how the product is specifically helping them shape how they spend and save for future responsibilities.
So, here we go, meet Renike.
—
Introduce yourself: What is your name and what do you do?
Hi! I am Renike & I’m a visual artist and illustrator. Basically, I draw and paint traditionally with fancy digital tools for a living.
When did you start saving on PiggyVest?
Hmm… I think early 2019. I’m not sure.
What do you spend most of your income on?
Internet, work gadgets, house bills, family etc.
What would you like to stop spending money on?
Internet maybe? It’s so expensive. But I can’t live without it. Apart from that, I don’t have any excessive spending habits.
If money wasn’t a concern, what would your career be in?
Travel vlogging, dance and I’d also love to watch k-dramas for a living (a new obsession, I’d also still be practicing art because it’s a passion I can’t live without.
How did you discover your passion for art and what inspired you to become a full-time freelance artist?
I became a full-time freelance artist because the typical Lagos 9–5 life wanted to ruin my life. I was constantly mentally and physically exhausted and one day I woke up and said “I can’t do this anymore” and that was it. I got some other job offers, but no one was offering me the amount of money I thought my time, skill, and Lagos stress was worth. Remote job opportunities weren’t common too. So I started to focus all my energy on improving my skills, getting clients, and growing my audience on social media. I was broke for a while, to be honest and my first full-time freelance year (2019) was really tough. But I’m really grateful for where I am today and I’m very optimistic about my future.
What inspires your art?
African women, our everyday life, skin, hairstyles, clothes, culture, jewelry, etc. I love fine things & African women are extremely beautiful.
What Piggyvest feature is your favorite?
Hmm… it has to be the Safelock feature. I love that you can open different Safelocks and keep money locked in for a specified period of time. The interest rates are also quite good.
What’s the most ridiculous thing you’ve spent money on?
Redecor money o. I used dollars to buy virtual gold, so I can buy throw pillows for the interior décor game I’m obsessed with. Lol
Or is it Call of Duty mobile battle pass? See let’s just move on…lol.
If you won a lottery, what’s the first thing you will do?
I’ll book a room in a really good hotel and just chill there for some time. Maximum self-pampering. Then I’ll have a clear head to plan the rest of the money wisely.
How would you spend a typical Friday night (Pre-covid). Netflix, party/turn up, hang out with your girls, or work?
I’m a dead babe, so I’m always indoors (pre and post covid), lol. Netflix, yes. Sometimes, I throw myself a mini party and dance for hours to my favorite Nigerian songs, while drinking sweet red wine.
If you retired today, what would you do with your free time?
I’d still be drawing and painting. Probably learn a new musical instrument. Definitely travelling more and spending time with my loved ones. I’ll probably also have a boujee hobby like cleaning my vintage cars.
How broke have you been? What was the extreme/crazy thing you did?
I’ve been really broke in this my life. Lol. Especially when I was in uni. I’m not really on the crazy side but yeah I started ushering jobs (for company events, Nestle and co) that were outside Lagos and travelled without telling my family.
Dinner with Beyonce or #5m
Omo! give me 5 million, lol. I can always check instagram if I want to see Beyonce.
Do you have any feedback for Piggyvest?
Absolutely love y’all! I’m so excited about the future of Piggyvest and I wish you all the absolute best and success.
